Winemaker’s Note

Thoughtfully sourced from a select vineyard near our Hamilton estate, these grapes were rescued from a local vineyard. Not wanting to see exceptional fruit go to waste, we seized the opportunity to harvest these precious grapes and craft a distinctive blend with Chardonel and Chardonnay.

This unique blend showcases the complementary nature of these white grapes: Chardonnay provides elegant structure and classic varietal character, while Chardonel—a Cornell University hybrid of Chardonnay and Seyval Blanc—contributes bright acidity and cold-climate resilience. A testament to our commitment to preserving exceptional fruit while exploring creative expressions that celebrate both sustainability and our region’s winemaking potential.

Frequently Asked Questions

What makes your Chardonnel / Chardonnay blend unique?

Our blend brings together the best of both grapes. Chardonnay contributes elegance, freshness, and classic citrus and orchard fruit flavors, while Chardonel adds a smooth texture, bright acidity, and resilience that makes it especially well suited to Virginia. The result is a balanced, refreshing wine with plenty of character.

Why does Chardonnay grow so well in Virginia?

Virginia’s warm days, cool nights, and diverse soils allow Chardonnay to develop ripe fruit while maintaining vibrant acidity. These growing conditions produce wines that are fresh, balanced, and expressive, making Chardonnay one of the state’s most respected white varieties.

What is Chardonel?

Chardonel is a hybrid grape developed by crossing Chardonnay with Seyval Blanc. It was created to combine the refined flavors of Chardonnay with improved resistance to disease and humidity, making it an excellent choice for regions like Virginia. It often produces wines with crisp acidity, soft texture, and notes of apple, pear, and citrus.

Why did you blend Chardonel with Chardonnay?

We wanted to highlight the strengths of both varieties. Chardonnay brings elegance and complexity, while Chardonel contributes freshness, bright fruit, and structure. Together, they create a wine that is vibrant, well-balanced, and uniquely suited to Virginia’s terroir.

If I enjoy other white wines, what can I compare this wine to?

If you enjoy unoaked Chardonnay, Pinot Grigio, Albariño, or Sauvignon Blanc, you’ll likely appreciate this blend. It offers crisp acidity and fresh fruit like Pinot Grigio and Albariño, while maintaining the rounded texture and elegance of Chardonnay.

What foods pair well with this wine?

This wine is incredibly versatile. It pairs beautifully with grilled seafood, roasted chicken, creamy pasta dishes, fresh salads, mild cheeses, and shellfish such as crab, shrimp, and scallops. Its bright acidity also makes it a great companion for lighter summer dishes and appetizers.
